What to see

  • The show: an opening film, a Kusatsu-bushi dance, a yumomi demonstration, then dance and yumomi to the Yumomi song.
  • Try yumomi: on Sundays and Mondays you can stir the water with a board about 180 cm long.
  • Why stir? Spring water of nearly 50°C is cooled to bathing temperature without diluting it.
  • The building: a bright two-storey space that smells of wood.

Seasons

  • In winter the morning show times change (Dec 1–Feb 28 last season). Check the official site for this winter’s times.

History

“Yumomi” means stirring very hot spring water with long boards to cool it without adding water. The show here began in 1960, and the building was rebuilt in a Taisho-romantic style in 2015.
