What to see

  • About 500 m of trees: over 400 cedars nearly 400 years old.
  • Some trunks measure 4 m around.

Seasons

  • The trees are said to have shielded travelers from summer sun and winter wind.

History

Said to have been planted in 1618 by Matsudaira Masatsuna on the shogunate's order. Part was cut in 1904 to pay for a new road. Now a national historic site.

Getting there

From Hakone-Yumoto take a bus for Hakone-machi (43 minutes) and get off at Hakone Shisho-mae; the trees are right there.
