What to see

  • The slope: silver grass covers the hillside with a path running through it.
  • Grass burning: held on a windless day each March.
  • Honours: listed among Kanagawa's 50 scenic spots.

Seasons

  • The plumes turn golden from late September to late October (tourism association).

History

Sengokuhara was called Sengokubara village until the early Edo period. Burning stopped for a while and trees took over, but it resumed in 1989.

Getting there

Reached by bus: about 30 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto on the Hakone Tozan Bus Togendai line (route T), getting off at Sengoku-kogen. The Odakyu highway bus from Shinjuku stops at the same place.

Before you go

The Hakone Navi page still carries an old note about the path being closed after a 2019 typhoon, so the current state of the path could not be confirmed.
